Disasters associated with adversenatural events are increasing in both frequency andintensity, and in many cases, have severe impacts oncountries and their populations, particularly those livingin poverty and in socially vulnerable situations. Poor orlimited access to both material and immaterial resourceshinders the ability of these populations to confront thedamages and losses caused by disasters, and thereby restoretheir material and psychosocial well-being in a timely andeffective manner. This note is particularly concerned withguiding countries in the design and implementation ofmethodologies typically used in Social Work, such as familysupport, case management, and other interventions, indisaster contexts in order to contribute to the constructionof Adaptive Social Protection (ASP) systems. Social Workstrategies can be employed within ASP systems to helpidentify and reduce risks, determine appropriate responses, and support strengthening the resilience of affectedindividuals and families.
