Japan's Program forEarthquake-Resistant School Buildings has increased theseismic safety of Japanese schools, and hence increased thesafety of Japanese schoolchildren, teachers, andcommunities. Since 2003, when the program accelerated, theshare of earthquake-resistant public elementary and juniorhigh schools has increased, from under half of schools in2002 to over 95 percent in April 2015. Japan is sharingknowledge from this program with developing countriesthrough its relationship with the Global Facility forDisaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), whose GlobalProgram for Safer Schools has been supported by theJapan–World Bank Program for Mainstreaming Disaster RiskManagement in Developing Countries and its implementing arm,the Disaster Risk Management Hub, Tokyo.
