Like Dar es Salaam, many large citiesface major transport challenges due to the continuous growthof the urban population, private vehicle ownership,congestion, and the fragility of public transportationsystems. Transport can become a constraint on both economicgrowth and social development and inclusion, along withincreased negative impacts on health and on the environment.Because of the increasing use of modern technology,transportation has become a data-rich industry. By bringingthe data together, and by using open formats, the data canbe used for innovative applications to help relieve urbantraffic congestion, to improve the provision and operationof public transport services, and to reduce environmentaldamage with the goal of improving the lives of citizens. Theuse of data enables transport planners, operators, and usersto obtain additional economic, social, and environmentalbenefits from the physical transport investment andinfrastructure. This report shows that Dar es Salaam is onthe cusp of a transport data revolution. Generally, theconclusions are that there are no major blocks to progress,but in many areas, there is a lot of work that will need tobe done over time.
