The Malawi Economic Monitor (MEM)provides ananalysis of economic and structuraldevelopmentissues in Malawi. This edition of the MEMwaspublished in October 2016. It follows on from thethreeprevious editions of the MEM, and is part of an ongoingseries, with future editions to follow twiceper year. Theaim of the publication is to foster better-informed policyanalysis and debate regarding the key challenges that Malawifaces in its endeavors to achieve high rates of stable,inclusive and sustainable economic growth. The MEM consistsof two parts: Part one presents areview of recent economicdevelopments and amacroeconomic outlook. Part two focuses ingreater depth on a special, selected topic relevant toMalawi’s development prospects.In this edition of the MEM,the focus of the specialtopic is on poverty andvulnerability. At a time when Malawi is experiencing asecond successive year offood insecurity, the special topicfocuses on the key factors that have led to persistentlyhigh povertyrates in rural areas, with these factorscontributing significantly to vulnerability to the impact ofclimate shocks. The special topic also identifies anddescribes potential pathways and reforms thatcould helpMalawi improve its level of resilience to better manage theimpact of future shocks.
