【 摘 要 】
This report aims to provide keyhighlights from two decades of IWMI research and the broaderirrigation literature on agricultural water productivity, with an emphasis on the evolution and application of theconcept, highlighting its contributions and limitationswhile identifying opportunities for further refinements inthe way it is understood and applied. Chapter two describesthe origins of the concept of agricultural waterproductivity and its methodological developments. Chapterthree illustrates the different ways the concept has beenoperationalized in applied research, offers a description ofthe pathways—with their associated interventions, forimproving water productivity, and discusses thecontributions to broader development objectives. Based onthese, and considering the broader literature, Chapter fourpresents a set of key lessons and insights from two decadesof research on water productivity. Chapter five concludes byhighlighting how a focus on agricultural water productivityhas brought greater attention to critical water scarcity andmanagement issues. Important strategic opportunities remain, however, for continued improvements in technologies andmanagement practices, data sources, and interdisciplinaryresearch to develop and apply more comprehensive approachesto address water scarcity concerns and, ultimately, makeprogress towards broader development objectives.
