【 摘 要 】

Diesel gensets contribute to emissionsof fine particulate matter (PM), including black carbon, which derives from the incomplete combustion of diesel (asoccurs in many diesel generating sets or gensets).Particulate matter is a predisposing factor for respiratoryand cardiopulmonary disease leading to increased hospitalvisits and risk of premature death. Local health costs canhave a greater impact in the short-run in densely populatedurban centers such as Abuja and Lagos. Black carbon (BC) isthe most strongly light-absorbing component of particulatematter and is the second largest warming agent after carbondioxide. The emerging role of BC as a significant driver ofglobal climate change is increasing attention on itsmitigation efforts. In addition to the negative health andthe climate effects of emissions, most gensets contributesignificantly to noise pollution which further reduces thequality of life of users and non-users alike.
