This report profiles poverty andassesses the performance of the social assistance (SA)system in the Turkish Cypriot community (TCc). The aim ofthis report is to provide information and evidence-basedanalysis to policy-makers on the determinants of poverty inthe TCc and on the effectiveness of the community’s socialassistance programs, with the ultimate objective of puttingforward recommendations on how to improve policy alleviatingmeasures. The poverty profile developed in this report canprovide policymakers with vital information on thecharacteristics and living conditions of poor households inthe TCc. The report presents information on the poverty andinequality rates in the TCc, highlights the individual andhousehold characteristics of the poor, as well as theregional aspects of poverty. This report also presents thefirst assessment of the TCc’s SA system since 2006. Thisreport consists of three chapters. The first chapterdescribes the data used and the methodology adopted in thereport. The second chapter presents poverty and inequalityindicators for the TCc and provides a profile of poorhouseholds. The third chapter focuses on the SA system inthe TCc. After briefly describing such system, the chapterassesses its performance. Some concluding remarks and policyrecommendations bring the note to a close.
