This report aims to present therationale for digitization of agribusiness payments inSub-Saharan Africa (SSA), assess the current status ofdigitization using demand and supply-side data, and identifykey actions that can help accelerate digitization. Thereport draws on an analysis of financial-inclusion data fromthe Global Findex database, a survey administered to selectagribusinesses active in SSA (henceforth referred to as theAfrica Agribusiness Payments Survey, or AAPS), and casestudies of select agribusinesses that responded to thissurvey. The Findex data analysis leverages questions in thesurvey that identify whether the respondent had receivedpayment against the sale of an agricultural good; how thepayment was received, in cash or through a digital means, defined to include an account at a bank or non-bankfinancial institution, mobile money account, or a card, and,if an account holder, whether the account was opened toreceive an agricultural payment. The AAPS was administeredto purposefully selected agribusinesses active in SSA, witheither a regional or national scope. Some firms were addedto the survey since they were known to have an activedigitization program, but this was not a requirement forinclusion in the survey.
