The objective of this report is toexpand our knowledge of the employment challenges facingindividuals in The Gambia. The Integrated Household Survey(IHS) 2015/16 on consumption, expenditure, and poverty isthe primary data source for the report. This survey offers acomprehensive, nationally representative picture of thecountry’s jobs market and, in particular, a betterunderstanding of the supply side of jobs. The analysistherefore covers employment structure, workercharacteristics, key labor market outcomes for differentgroups across regions and poverty status, and constraintsaffecting participation in the labor market. The reportfocuses on different issues related to employment. Itprovides an overview of the workforce and discusses issuesrelated to access to jobs. It then elaborates on thecomposition and quality of employment. The report alsodiscusses human capital and skills building preparedness forfuture labor demand. It concludes by focusing on options forpolicy agenda and discusses a set of short-term andmedium-term options that could be the basis for an effectivejobs strategy in The Gambia.
