In this context, this note summarizesthe findings of a recent World Bank, SACU Secretariatassessment of regional trade facilitation based on the Tradeand Transport Facilitation Assessment (TTFA) methodology.The assessment looks at regional trade facilitation throughthe lens of value chains, with the objective to understandhow the region’s trade and transport environment could beimproved to facilitate more extensive and deeply integratedregional trade, linked to competitive participation inglobal value chains. The remainder of this note isstructured as follows: section two provides a brief overviewof regional trade and freight flows. This is followed insection three by a brief review of the trade and transportenvironment (including infrastructure and policy) acrosseach SACU member state. Section four summarizes the findingsof the detailed analysis, from a trade facilitationperspective, of the regional value chains in four keyindustry sectors: agro-processing; agro-processing;automotive; beef; and textiles/apparel. Section five thenfocuses on identifying potential solutions to three keytrade and transport facilitation challenges identifiedthrough the value chain assessments. Finally, section six concludes.
