In January 2013, International FinanceCorporation (IFC) launched a research project entitled womenon corporate boards in Bosnia and Herzegovina, FYRMacedonia, and Serbia. The purpose of the project was togather information on the representation of women oncorporate boards and to learn about the determinants offemale board membership in these countries. Which skills andknowledge do women need to possess to become a member of aboard? Do women’s decision-making and leadership stylesdiffer from those of their male counterparts? Are there areany impediments for women aspiring to board membership? Andwhat useful lessons can be learned to inform policy? Theresearch was carried out over a period of four months. Itstarted with desktop research conducted over a two-weekperiod between January 21 and February 3, 2013 and whichaimed at identifying around 30 female and male board membersin each country covered by the project who were willing toparticipate. Interviews with board members were conductedbetween February 5 and March 23, 2013. The report presentsresearch results.
