The state of Nagaland, with a populationof two million, is situated in the North-East region ofIndia. The state's topography is hilly with very poorroads and connectivity. The state has 11 districts, 52blocks, and 1,500 villages. In 2014-15, per capita net statedomestic product was estimated at US dollar 1,172 (INR78,526), slightly lower than the national figure of USdollar 1,297 (INR 86,879). However, the socioeconomicdistribution in Nagaland is more equitable than the nationalpattern, in 2012-13, an estimated 19 percent of thepopulation lived below the official poverty line in thestate, lower than the national average of 22 percent. Tribalcommunities make up almost 90 percent of Nagaland'spopulation. The Nagaland Department of Health and FamilyWelfare (DoHFW) requested technical support for betterunderstanding nutrition determinants and developingstrategies that could be implemented at the community levelwith the support of the Nagaland Health Project. Theobjectives are to better understand the barriers to improvednutrition and health in Nagaland and to help the stategovernment to develop strategies to address these issues.This involves analytical work (involving both primary andsecondary data analysis) to identify gaps and bottlenecks,informing the development of contextually-appropriate andfeasible strategies. Technical assistance focuses onsupporting the state government in the design of strategiesbased on the findings of the analytical work. Thedevelopment objectives of this advisory services andanalytics (ASA) activity are: (i) to improve knowledge aboutthe determinants of malnutrition in North East India; (ii)to identify gaps in maternal and child health and nutritionservices for disadvantaged communities; and (iii) to supportdevelopment of cross-sectoral strategies to combatmalnutrition at the community level.
