Poverty reduction and youth employmentremain deeply intertwined in Mauritania. Mauritania’sjob-related challenge is characterized by a low-growthmacroeconomic context, high reliance on minerals andextractives, and marked poverty and social exclusion. Withyouth (15–24 year olds) comprising over 40 percent of thepopulation as of 2014, they are particularly vulnerable tohigh social exclusion.The main objective of this policynote is to provide an overview of the jobs challenge inMauritania, with a focus on constraints and opportunitiesfacing youth over the short to long term. To this end, itassesses overarching youth employment trends and gaps andoffers recommendations for facilitating their entry intogood, productive jobs.The note analyzes policy options,risks, and opportunities for strengthening youth employmentprospects over the short to long term, with a focus onactive labor market programs within an integrated approachto diversification, job creation, and poverty reduction.Moving forward, stronger public-private coalitions lie atthe heart of youth employment and social inclusion in Mauritania.
