The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)is a fragile, post-conflict country with high demographicgrowth and poor governance, all of which have devastatedinstitutions, the economy and the social fabric. The DRC wasdevastated by war in the 1990s and early 2000s, whichclaimed millions of lives and all but destroyed much of thephysical and social infrastructure of the country. Inparticular, DRC remains marked by high vulnerability ofvarious populations as a consequence of past and currentlocal and regional instability, especially in the East.Agrowing number of studies show that exposure to violenceespecially negatively affects the well-being of children andhampers their development. This report is organized asfollows. Section 1 presents the DRC’s social and politicalcontext, as well as the rationale for exploring innovativeapproaches to build resilience and social cohesion. Section2 summarizes some of the evidence on pathways linking sportsand culture to development. Section 3 presents the DRCsports and culture institutional environment, and the lastsection presents a few recommendations on how to furtherthis agenda in DRC.
