【 摘 要 】
How rapidly will child malnutritionrespond to income growth? This article explores thatquestion using household survey data from 12 countries aswell as data on malnutrition rates in a cross-section ofcountries since the 1970s. Both forms of analysis yieldsimilar results. Increases in income at the household andnational levels imply similar rates of reduction inmalnutrition. Using these estimates and better thanhistorical income growth rates, the article finds that themillennium development goal of halving the prevalence ofunderweight children by 2015 is unlikely to be met throughincome growth alone. What is needed to accelerate reductionsin malnutrition is a balanced strategy of income growth andinvestment in more direct interventions.
