【 摘 要 】
Although much of the literature on childlabor looks at the decision on whether to send a child toschool or to work (or both), little attention has focused onthe number of hours worked. This article analyzes thedeterminants of school attendance and hours worked bychildren in Pakistan and Nicaragua. A theoretical model ofchildren's labor supply is used to simultaneouslyestimate the school attendance decision and the hoursworked, using a full model maximum likelihood estimator. Themodel analyzes the marginal effects of explanatoryvariables, conditioning on latent states, that is, thepropensity of the household to send the child to work ornot. These marginal effects are in some cases ratherdifferent across latent states, with important policy implications.
