【 摘 要 】
This paper discusses the importance ofan “integrated approach” to the study of the effects of FDIon host countries. Macro-level work that examines countriesat different stages of development and institutionalcapacity is needed to surface the role of local conditionsand absorptive capacities; micro-level work, that isfirm-level data in developed as well as developing nations,to understand the mechanisms that impart substance to theanticipated benefits; and theoretical work to guide theanalyses. The paper summarizes likely motives for foreigndirect investment and potential effects of FDI on localeconomies as well as recent findings from the macroliterature on the role of complementarities between FDI andlocal policies, conditions, and institutions and summarizesnew efforts to understand the micro mechanisms and channelsby which host countries can benefit from multinationalactivity, within and between firm productivity increases.
