【 摘 要 】
China's accession to the WorldTrade Organization (WTO) was a watershed event for bothChina and the WTO. After 30 years of effective isolationfrom the world economy, and close to a quarter century ofautonomous reforms, China joined the legal framework of theworld trading system. In doing so China made anextraordinarily wide-ranging set of commitments to reform ofits own legal and administrative system and tothorough-going liberalization of trade in goods andservices. This issue contains five studies from a majorproject undertaken by the World Bank and the DevelopmentResearch Centre of China's State Council. A keyobjective of the studies was to assess the impact of thereforms associated with WTO accession on poverty in China, particularly in rural areas, which now lag so badly behindurban areas.
