In the clean energy transition, thevalue of natural gas infrastructure is very important foroperating the energy system. Gas-fired power plantscontribute to optimized energy systems when they aredesigned to operate flexibly, responding to demand patternsand the variable supply of renewable energy. Smartelectricity grids, renewable energy, battery storagetechnology, and gas-fired power plants in combination willgenerally be the lowest cost, low-carbon solution to thegrowing energy requirements of emerging markets. Privateinvestors and financiers are responding to theseopportunities, but the full potential will only be reachedwith improvements in policy, regulation, and procurement indestination markets.
