In Indonesia, researchers evaluated aproject to expand access to early childhood services in thecountry’s poorest areas by giving communities grants forpreschools and providing teacher training and facilitatorsto encourage use of services. The evaluation found that thisproject boosted enrollment and children’s development, especially for those from the most disadvantagedbackgrounds. Now, with support from the strategic impactevaluation fund, the research team is going back to seewhether the early childhood services created with theproject’s support are still functioning and how they aresustaining themselves given that project support has ended. As the Government of Indonesia considers expandingcompulsory education to include pre-primary school, theresults can provide important evidence for how to do this.
