The World Bank is committed to ending extremepoverty and boosting shared prosperity. Providingclean, safe water to people wherever they live is criticalto achieving these goals. A World Bank research teamanalyzed more than 130 water, sanitation and hygieneevaluations to understand what evidence there isfor successful programs and what still needs to belearned. The researchers found that evidence is clearthat improving sanitation and handwashing reducesdiarrhea. The evidence is less clear when it comes toexpanding services to large populations or changingbehaviors, such as getting people to add chlorine todrinking water or to wash their hands. More researchand more innovative programs are needed to establishthe path forward.
