Dozens of municipalities areexperimenting with e-buses, while some last-mile deliverycompanies are using pilot fleets to test performance. At thesame time, a smaller group of operators are pushing aheadwith more drastic, big bang efforts to put dozens or evenhundreds of electric vehicles into service. The authors sawhow some locations have already reached total cost ofownership (TCO) parity, while other places will requirefurther reductions in costs and perhaps someforward-thinking tax and tariff policies. The bad news isthat the track record for electric buses to date has beenmixed, and e-bus adoption has not scaled up as fast as manyhad hoped due to institutional, technical, and financialchallenges. For those seeking to stay the course withinternal combustion engines, there are plenty of validarguments. This report will bring some of the problems outin the open.
