The Nile countries are endowed withsubstantial energy resources. Yet, these have not been fullytapped and several Nile countries have low levels of accessto electricity. This note showcases the achievements made atthe regional level to address this issue through cooperativeprojects of regional significance. These include projectsthat extend and link transmission lines to achieveinterconnections, and ones that promote responsibledevelopment and generation of hydropower. The Nile basininitiative (NBI) has played a catalytic role in facilitatingthese projects, reducing power poverty, and increasingnational energy security.
