Block chain, or distributed ledgertechnology, has the potential to address many problems inemerging markets. In this note the authors consider whetherblock chain can be used to mitigate the problem ofde-risking by financial institutions, which affectsreceivers of remittances, businesses that need correspondentbanking relationships, and charities working in conflictcountries. Block chain is an evolving technology, andunderstanding its scope and limitations will be critical toemploying it to address these and related issues.
