For decades, policy experts’ andpractitioner consensus has been growing about the crucialrole quality data plays in informing policy making. This hasled to investment and projects to increase quality dataavailability. But progress has been slow, as reflected byslow improvement in country statistical capacity, manycountries remain data deprived. The IPNOS toolkit is basedon the notion that producing more and better statistics,while requiring adequate resources, should also beefficient. Various initiatives assess national statisticalsystems’ (NSS) and data production. The World Bank’s IPNOSinitiative complements existing kits, providing in-depthanalytical tools to evaluate the efficiency of nationalstatistical offices (NSOs), including costs, data quality,and NSO management. IPNOS application in 3 countries hasidentified bottlenecks and areas for improvement to informdata policies.
