Many forms of tobacco are used (invarying proportions) in the different regions of Afghanistan– most commonly cigarettes, chelam and snuff. TheAfghanistan Demographic and Health Survey 2015, published in2017, provides insight into tobacco consumption across thecountry and allows a comprehensive analysis of some of itspatterns. Generational differences in the forms of tobaccoused may decrease or even disappear as younger generationsgrow older. As urbanization increases, cigarettes could bethe main tobacco product used in the country in comingyears. Almost 60 percent of male smokers consumed 10 or morecigarettes per day in 2015 (the number that indicates anaddiction). Rates of tobacco use and cigarette smoking arehigher in many of the provinces thatare close toAfghanistan’s borders. As the country is not a significanttobacco producer, additional research is needed to learnwhether higher tobacco use in these provinces is influencedby the illicit trade with neighboring countries.
