Making evidence-based decisionsregarding coastal environments, infrastructure, and naturalresources and their interaction with people requiresaccurate data. Because of the nature of coastal phenomenaand their impacts on livelihoods and the environment, integrated systems that collect and share data regionallyand focus on coastal areas and marine conditions, land use, climate patterns, and natural hazards are needed. Monitoringcoastal areas requires scientific input, public-privatepartnerships, and an interconnected effort among nationaland regional actors. A harmonized monitoring system willincrease the visibility and efficiency of data andinformation systems, facilitate decision making, promotebest regional coastal management practices, and increase theresilience of coastal environments.
