The relationship between child marriageand fertility can be due in part to the socio-economic andcultural context in which girls who marry early tend tolive. But child marriage may also have a direct impact onfertility after controlling for socio-economic and culturalcontext. Marrying early is often associated with a lack ofagency for girls, including in terms of access to familyplanning that can help delay or reduce births if women sodesire. For societies, higher total fertility rates lead tohigher population growth, lower growth in gross domesticproduct (GDP) per capita, slower poverty reduction, anddifficulties for governments to provide basic services to agrowing population. This brief estimates the impact of childmarriage on the number of children that women have overtheir lifetime in Bangladesh, as part of a series ofstandardized briefs on this topic for multiple countries.
