This brief provides an overview of themost relevant programs promoting social accountability inIndonesia's primary health sector. It focuses onmaternal and child health, and summarizes key global andregional lessons learned to inform social accountabilityinitiatives in the country. A number of programs inIndonesia have increased citizens' access toinformation in the health sector and have empowered citizensto hold government accountable to basic health services.Some lessons include using multi-tool and multi-stakeholderapproaches to social accountability strategies in order toreduce implementation risks in different contexts. Socialaccountability can reinforce programmatic gains bystrengthening institutional mechanisms for problem solving.
