The study examined the effect of gas well compressor noise on breeding bird populations of the Rattlesnake Canyon Habitat Management Area in San Juan County, New Mexico. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management administers approximately 18,000 actively producing gas wells within the San Juan Basin on about 1.5 million acres of land. Large gas-fired compressors are used on many wells to increase the efficiency of gas extraction and to pressurize gas pipelines to transport the extracted gas. Noise produced by these compressors has prompted concern both for its effect on human communities and for its potential to affect wildlife populations in adjacent habitats.
