The build utility is presented as an alternative to make. It is very portable and was designed with parallel operation from the start. Build extends the traditional make model by extending the include facility to allow for construction of dependency lattices that span directory trees. A number of features provided by build support improved meta-project component encapsulation giving improved project scalability. Build is generally compatible with most make implementations and supports the extensive macro function facility introduced by GNU make.
