The CH2M HILL Hanford Group Inc. (CHG) operates the Hanford Site Tank Farms for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of River Protection (ORP). The Tank Farms include 177 underground tanks containing approximately 54 million gallons of mixed radioactive waste. The primary hazard is from radionuclides in the waste. By volume, the waste consists primarily of sodium salts. Also mixed with the waste are some metals and organic compounds. The chemicals in the tanks contribute to the material available for release, which is a factor in any accident analysis.
