The Organization of American States (OAS) concentrates on four broad objectives: democracy promotion, human rights protection, economic and social development, and regional security cooperation. This report covers the background of the OAS and discusses the importance of U.S. participation in this organization in order to exert authority and shape outcomes in the Western Hemisphere.
