Statement on the Second Monitoring Report by the German Government for 2012: Expert commission on the "Energy of the future" monitoring process

On 8 April 2014, the second monitoring report from the Federal Government and the joint statement from the Expert Commission about the "Energy of the Future" monitoring process were presented. The Ecologic Institute supports the work of the Expert Commission by providing scientific input.The statement on the German "Energiewende", under review for the second year in 2012, had mixed findings. The major message is that while Germany is expected to meet its renewable energy targets, further efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy efficiency are necessary. The Federal Government has announced clear priorities in this regard, which now must be implemented. The joint statement is available for download.The independent Expert Commission, composed of Prof. Dr. Andreas Löschel, Prof. Dr. Georg Erdmann, Prof. Dr. Frithjof Staiß and Dr. Hans-Joachim Ziesing, provided scientific support and delivered a joint statement on the monitoring process, which should show progress towards the German "Energiewende", and with it a highly efficient energy system based on renewable sources by the year 2050.The Expert Commission's joint statement had the objective to evaluate the German government's monitoring report. In addition, relevant development, targets, and policy measures were analyzed in a constructively critical manner. An overall assessment of the German "Energiewende" by the Expert Commission was not foreseen and could not have been carried out in the given timeframe. A more extensive and in-depth assessment of cause-effect relationships will be part of the progress report in 2014.Ecologic Institute provides scientific support to the work of the Expert Commission with a focus on the key topics that Dr. Hans-Joachim Ziesing and the Expert Commission selected for their joint statement.An English summary of the Expert Commission's joint statement as well as the summary of the Government's monitoring report can also be downloaded from the Federal Network Agency's website.
