The Client Utility project at HP Labs was started to explore ideas needed to build a scalable, secure, and manageable peer-to-peer computing environment. The results of that research formed the basis for e-speak, an open source project that HP also released as a fully supported product. This report is the most complete description of the Client Utility architecture at the time the research work was transferred to the newly formed Open Services (soon to be renamed E-speak) Operation. It is reproduced here for its historical interest, showing the thinking that led to e-speak and the concept of e-services. 118 Pages
