Like all instruments used for measuring physical quantities, spectrophotometers need to be calibrated and characterized periodically. In this paper we give an overview of simple procedures that require a low commitment from the metrologist, yet ensure some control over the data obtained from the measurements and allow the certification of the measurement's quality. We give some advice on handling the material and on how to take into consideration thermal effects such as thermochromism. 10 Pages
