【 摘 要 】

The effect of subsurface oxygen on the orientation of molecular oxygen chemisorbed on Ag(110) was investigated using near-edge adsorption fine structure (NEXAFS) analysis. The O-O bond is aligned parallel to the surface, along the [1 $($) over bar$$ 10] azimuth with and without subsurface oxygen. Both the sigma* (532.6 eV) and out-of-plane pi* (530.2 eV) resonances were observed, indicating that the out-of-plane pi* orbital is incompletely filled in the adsorbed state.
