【 摘 要 】
HG: I trained as a computational biologist, so I come frommore of a theoretical background. I saw myself as a datascientist more than anything else before data scientists were evencalled data scientists. When I started graduate school, there was thisexplosion in biological data. There was this surge of the applicationof microarrays, which were pretty new at the time, to measure mRNAexpression genome-wide in different organisms and for differentconditions. Specifically, we were seeing the birth of these precisionmedicine applications of microarrays to profile different types ofcancers, look at their gene expression patterns, and learn somethingfrom them. It was relatively good timing for someone with mybackground to start thinking about how to aggregate and integratethese types of data sets and learn something from them in a broadperspective. I ended up joining Saeed Tavazoie’s lab at Princeton, which had a computational and experimental side. I started onthe computational side, where I trained with a postdoc, OlivierElemento, and we started this project, asking, “How can we makesense of the broad regulations that happen in the context of cancer? What is the identity of cancer cells from a molecular perspective?” .
