【 摘 要 】
The Madre de Dios (MDD) regionof southern Peru is one of the mostbiodiverse regions in the world, home tothousands of endemic flora and fauna. Likemost wild places, MDD is facing tremendousenvironmental degradation, primarily inthe form of artisanal gold mining. Thisphenomenon has had seemingly irreversibleimpacts on the department’s water quality, forest carbon stores, biodiversity, and humanhealth.1 All of these complications emergefrom the unregulated excavation of soil alongwaterways, removal of trees, and heavy use ofmercury to extract gold.
