【 摘 要 】

This study investigated theeffect of credit access on the adoptionintensity of improved maize varieties inOsun State. A number of 150 maizefarmers were selected through amultistage sampling procedure from usinga structured questionnaire. Descriptivestatistics, adoption index, and Tobitregression model were used to analyse thedata collected. The results showed thatMajority of maize farmers were over40 years (52.6%), male (87%), andmarried (87%). The result also showedthat majority of the farmers did not adoptimproved maize varieties (55%) in thestate. Swan 1 improved variety wasmajorly adopted (87.1%), while DMRESR-W variety was less adopted (62.9%)in the State. Just a few of maize farmershad access to credit in the State (20%).The mean adoption intensity in the Statewas observed to 62%. Based on adoptionintensity of improved maize varieties, adopters were classified as partialadopters (65%) and full adopters (35%).Tobit regression estimates showed thatcredit access, household size, secondaryoccupation, years of education andextension contact have significant effecton the adoption intensity of improvedmaize varieties. In accordance with thefindings, we therefore recommend thatmicrofinance institutions should lookattentively at scaling up their creditservices to enhancing adoption intensityof improved maize varieties.
