【 摘 要 】

The essence of this studywas to examine the land ownershippattern in Osun State, Nigeria, with aview to assessing its effect on thetechnical efficiency of the farms.Precisely, the farm efficiency level wasestimated; factors that determine farmefficiency were identified, and the impactof land ownership on-farm efficiency wasalso assessed. A three-stage randomsampling was used to select144 respondents. Data collected using apretested interview schedule wassubjected to descriptive statistics, stochastic production frontier function, and average treatment effect. The resultsshow that land ownership by absoluteinterest accounted for about 65% of thefarmers. The mean technical efficiencylevel of the farms was 47%. Farm sizeand labour are necessary factors to beincreased to have increased output. Thenon-access to credit and land ownershipby absolute interest constituted totechnical inefficiency of the farms.Similarly, ownership of farmland byabsolute interest reduced efficiency by24% among sampled farmers and 25.5%among owners of farmland. The study, therefore, suggested that farm size shouldbe increased, and credit facilities aremade available to farmers to facilitate theacquisition of necessary inputs to increaseoutput given the existing technology. Thiscan be by way of making accessible tofood crop farmers, lands belonging to thegovernment, which are currently not inuse.
