【 摘 要 】
Shrubs and trees of thegenus Ziziphus are a good example ofnaturally occurring multipurpose plantspecies with great potential in aridregions. This study was conducted toinvestigate the effect of cold stratificationon seed germination and seedling growthof Ziziphus lotus (L.) Lam. Seeds weresubjected to 0, 45, 90 and 120 days ofcold stratification at 5°C. We alsoexamined fruit, kernel and seedmorphology. For each treatment period,four replicates of 50 seeds were incubatedin plastic containers between two layersof moist sand at 15% and undergreenhouse conditions for 15-day period.At the end of the experiment, the finalgermination percentage (FGP), shootlength and root length were assessed. Theresults clearly indicated that increasingduration of cold stratification improvedseed germination. The most effectivestratification period was 120 days whereZ. lotus recorded 83% of FGP and16.5 cm of total seedling length. Coldstratification treatments significantlyincreased shoot height, root length, aswell as seedling total length. 120 daysstratification treatment resulted in thehighest shoot and root length (6.80 cmand 9.75 cm, respectively). An overviewon the emergence of Z. lotus seedlingsduring a 15-day period was alsoillustrated.
