【 摘 要 】
Weed incursion in cultivatedfields is a serious biological problem, whichcauses considerable yield losses ofeconomically important field crops throughallelopathy and competitive interactions.Spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa)and yellow melilot (Melilotus officinalis)are among the most prevalent weeds incultivated fields of Pakistan, particularly inwheat fields. Like many other weeds, theymay pose allelopathic and competitivechallenges to field crops. The objective ofthis study was to evaluate allelopathicpotentials of the two weeds on germinationand seedling growth of wheat underlaboratory conditions. Amounts of 15, 20,25 and 30% concentrated leaf aqueousextracts of C. maculosa and M. officinaliswere prepared and tested for their effects ongermination percentage, radicle andcoleoptile lengths of wheat. Germination, radicle and coleoptile lengths of test cropdeclined significantly at higherconcentration (25-30%) of the extracts oftwo weeds. However, concentration ofM. officinalis up to 20% had either no effector stimulatory effects on the studied growthcharacteristics of wheat. Highestgermination inhibition and decreasedseedling growth were caused by leafextracts of C. maculosa at 30% extractconcentration. Growth inhibition wasgenerally dependent on the extractconcentration. The study indicated that bothplant exhibited allelopathic activity andgrowth inhibitory effects on wheat at higherconcentration; however, extracts ofC. maculosa were more phytoinhibitory than M. officinalis. The weeds could serveas potent allelopathic plants formanagement of other weeds.
