【 摘 要 】

The key to increasingagricultural output in developing countriesis improving the productivity of farmers, which cannot be achieved without marketsthat would effectively bind the increasinglyspecialized activities of thousands of widelydispersed producers into an integratednational economy. Although, there is a highpotential for rural farmers to derivelivelihood from market-oriented agricultureand improve their standard of living, butwhat are those factors determining farmers’market participation. Thus, this studyinvestigates the determinants of marketparticipation among maize farmers inOgbomoso zone of Oyo state, Nigeria. Asimple random sampling technique wasused in the selection of respondents and awell-structured questionnaire was used togather information on socio-economicattributes and market participation amongmaize farmers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.Eighty questionnaire were administered, but79 retrieved were subjected to analysis.Data were analysed using descriptivestatistics and probit regression. The resultsshow that majority of the farmers were male(70.9%), married (67.1%) and had aminimum of secondary education (74.7%)and above. Also, 70% had direct access andplanted improved maize seed and 58% soldmaize produced in the urban market. Probitmodel result shows that gender, age, maritalstatus, household size, farming experience, educational level and membership ofassociation/group are the majordeterminants influencing marketparticipation in the study area. The studyrecommends that government shouldencourage formation of associations/groups,where farmers can get information aboutmarket situations and formulate policies on adult literacy programme to encouragefarmers to participate more in market.
