【 摘 要 】
Cecilia Helena Payne (later Gaposchkin) once said that immigrantsshould become citizens of their new countries for the samereason that a woman takes her husband’s name—out of gratitude.Indeed she and Sergei Illarionovich Gaposchkin became US citizens, and she often published as Cecilia P. Gaposchkin, thoughher daughter, Katharine Gaposchkin Haramundanis, when lecturingabout her mother’s work, generally called her Payne. Andmost of us will use Payne-Gaposchkin when writing about her,as we very often should because she made an enormously significantcontribution to 20th-century astronomy in her 1925 PhDdissertation at Harvard (though the degree was awarded by Radcliffebecause Harvard had not yet worked out how to recognizewomen by 1925).
