【 摘 要 】

Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer worldwide. Tumor metastasisis the most common cause of death in breast cancer. In view of the high mortality inbreast cancer patients, there is a need to identify new prognostic biomarkers. IMP3has a role in induction of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) and SLUG is anEMT marker. Both of these have been implicated in cancer metastasis. Hence, IMP3and SLUG in breast might prove to be potential therapeutic targets in the future. Methods: This was a retrospective study conducted on 60 breast carcinoma cases in atertiary care center in North India using tissue microarrays. Demographic and clinicopathological details were recorded. Immunohistochemistry for IMP3 and SLUG wasperformed. Their IHC expression was evaluated in terms of percentage cell-positivityand semi-quantitatively for intensity of staining (weak¼ 1, moderate¼ 2 and strong¼3). Data was recorded on a pre-designed proforma and analyzed. Results: IMP3 positivity was found in 87% and SLUG positivity was found in 90%breast carcinoma cases. IMP3 positivity was significantly associated with tumor size (p¼ 0.03) and TNM stage (p ¼ 0.024). IMP3 staining intensity showed significant association with tumor histological grade (p ¼ 0.009), TNM stage (p ¼ 0.036) andmolecular subtype (p ¼ 0.03). SLUG immunoexpression was significantly associatedwith TNM stage (p ¼ 0.006) and its staining intensity showed significant associationwith age (p ¼ 0.025) and TNM stage (p ¼ 0.004). A highly significant association (p<0.001) was found between IMP3 and SLUG positivity and staining intensities (p<0.001). Significant correlation was also found between IMP3 and SLUG percentagecell positivities (p <0.001).Conclusions: Significant association of immunoexpression of IMP3 and SLUG withTNM stage proves them to be poor prognostic markers. Also, significant positivecorrelation between IMP3 and SLUG highlights their proposed role in tumor invasiveness and aggressiveness via EMT in breast carcinomas. Hence, IMP3 and SLUGbased targeted therapies might prove to be useful in treatment of breast carcinoma.
