【 摘 要 】

Misfolded prion proteins are the cause of a number of fatal brain diseases such as scrapie, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and mad cow disease. Researchers are generating new versions of these malformed molecules in order to gain better insight into these diseases. Mad cow disease has jumped the species barrier to infect cats and humans, and it is feared other prion diseases may capable of infecting multiple hosts also. Therefore to prevent novel prion infections the newly generated prion proteins are subject to strict biosafety conditions in the lab.
