【 摘 要 】

Economic, social, cultural, and geographic barriers existin rural Nepal that preventmany girls from successfullyreaching higher levels ofeducation. This research wasconducted with the aim ofidentifying the enablingenvironments and support systems that have allowed girls fromthe rural and mountainous Solukhumbu District of Nepal tosuccessfully reach ‘‘college’’-level education in class levels 11 and12, despite the presence of extant barriers to their educationalsuccess. Results indicate that 4 primary factors create thefoundation of educational success for girls: the motivation anddetermination of the girl to succeed in education; the support ofthe girls’ families and the commitment of the families to education;the egalitarian treatment of all students at all levels of school byteachers; and the financial and lodging support provided by theSalleri Girls’ Hostel for Higher Education, run by a localnongovernmental organization (NGO). Results show success isachieved through financial support programs; family support, bothin terms of motivation and encouragement and through reducinggirls’ domestic and family care responsibilities; increasingawareness of the benefits of education in communities; andsupport offered by NGO programs. Recommendations for effectivefuture initiatives to support girls’ education in the region includethe establishment of more hostels for girls, offering financialsupport to families, and leading community awareness programsabout education.
