【 摘 要 】

This article deals with urban reform projects carried out in the Federal Capital and in the Recife neighborhood, including its port, in the early years of the 20th century. Our intention is to analyze the role of hygiene and sanitation plans in the two urban centers, from the first moments to the general plans of urban reform, responsible for significant impacts on morphology and the socio-spatial order of the city. This article seeks to demonstrate that sanitarism has also been characterized not only as an innovative project, but also as an instrument of control of the social order of the city.
