【 摘 要 】

Sensus Communis: An Essay on the Freedom of Wit and Humour is the second of a collection of six treatises which Anthony Ashley Cooper (the third Earl of Shaftesbury, 1671-1713) published in 1711 under the title of Characteristics of Men, Manners, Opinions, Times. This paper aims to analyze the close relation that the concepts of “reason” and “raillery” assume in the referred work and its importance to the elaboration of Shaftesburian notion of “common sense”.
